“Please check the coins,” Ashwin on Root winning 8th consecutive toss
Ashwin on Root winning 8th consecutive toss: India’s premier off-spinner praised the English captain with a funny tweet.
During the third Test of the ongoing England’s tour of Sri Lanka at Colombo, England captain Joe Root won the toss and chose to bat after England have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
While there is no real achievement in winning a toss for it is not in the hands of a player, it has become a significant advantage in the modern-day cricket, chiefly in cricket’s ancestral format. The fact that home teams tend to gain a considerable advantage after winning the toss in itself sums up the whole conversation.
Luckily for Root and England, England have won their third consecutive toss during the series in Sri Lanka. Apart from that, Root had won five consecutive tosses during India’s tour of England earlier this year. As a result, the English captain has now won eight tosses in his last eight Test matches.
All in all, in the 24 Test matches that he has captained England in, he has won the toss 18 times.
Among the captains who have most tosses in Test cricket are South Africa’s Graeme Smith (60 tosses in 109 matches), Australia Allan Border (46 tosses in 93 matches) and Ricky Ponting (37 tosses in 77 matches). Talking of averages, Root currently has a better average (75%) than each one of them.
Ashwin pointed out the same in his tweet; albeit in a chuckling manner. “Annnndddd Joe Root wins his 8th toss in a row, yes England have played some awesome cricket, but such a winning streak with the toss is incredible. Dear match referees please check the coins you dish out,” his tweet read.
