Lionel Messi could break this stunning record held by Manchester United legend
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi guided the side to its second consecutive La Liga title last night, and has grown closer to breaking a Manchester United legend’s record.
Lionel Messi scored the only goal of the game to lead Barcelona to La Liga title last night. The Argentine superstar came on as a substitute at the start of the second half, and scored with a clean finish in the 62nd minute against Levante.
Barcelona lifted its second consecutive La Liga title with the win last night, and now sets its eye on the Champions League. The Catalan side is also in the final of the Copa del Rey, where Valverde’s men will take on Valencia.
This was Lionel Messi’s 10th La Liga title. He became the first Barcelona player to lift as many league titles at the club, breaking his former teammate Xavi’s record.
However, there’s one more record which Messi could break this year. And it is currently held by Manchester United’s legend, Ryan Giggs.
Messi to break Giggs’ record?
Ryan Giggs has won 36 titles with Manchester United throughout his time at the club. While there are selected few players who have won more titles in their career, Giggs holds the record for the most number of titles with the same club.
And this is the record which Lionel Messi could break.
The Barcelona captain, with the La Liga win last night, has now won 34 titles with Barcelona. If the Catalan side proceeds to win the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, Messi will equal Giggs’ record.
Given Barca secures the treble, there’s a genuine chance that Messi will break Giggs’ record in this year as well.
A treble would mean that Barcelona will play for three more titles this year – The Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
Ryan Giggs has won 13 league titles with Manchester United and various domestic trophies, which include the Community Shield, the FA Cup and the League Cup. In Europe, Giggs has lifted the Champions League title twice.
