Stand-in New Zealand captain Tom Latham had won the toss and chose to bat after in a 23-over encounter. It was a 73-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Ross Taylor (47*) and Latham (37) which saw the hosts scoring 131/4.

In the second innings, Trent Boult and Matt Henry reduced the opposition to 9/5 in the fourth over. Struggling from the word go, the visitors ended up scoring 99/9 in 23 overs. Other than Boult (3) and Henry (2), spinners in Mitchell Santner (3) and Todd Astle (1) also contributed among the wickets.
