The second match of the second season of the ongoing Mzansi Super League will be played today between Durban Heat and Tshwane Spartans at Kingsmead in Durban.
There is no hiding to the fact that all eyes will be on former South Africa captain AB de Villiers who will be leading the visiting Spartans today. With the 35-year old retiring from international cricket last year, there are now limited opportunities to witness the great batsman play.
While he plays in a few T20 leagues around the world, Mzansi Super League is the lone time when he plays in South Africa post his retirement.
The right-hand batsman had recently participated in England’s T20 Cup. In the eight matches that de Villiers played for Middlesex, he scored 348 runs at an average of 69.60 and a strike rate of 182.19 including four half-centuries.
Playing the last season of the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bangalore, de Villiers had scored 442 runs in 13 matches at an average of 44.20 and a strike rate of 154 including five half-centuries.
Given his recent form, Spartans would be hoping for de Villiers to lead from the front with the bat in hand. Apart from de Villiers, Spartans also comprise of tried and tested names like Tom Curran, Theunis de Bruyn, Dean Elgar, Heinrich Klaasen, Morne Morkel, Lungi Ngidi and Roelof van der Merwe.

An unfortunate development coming in from Durban is that the start of the match has been delayed due to overnight rain. If rain doesn’t pour down from hereon, the match is highly likely to be played. However, don’t be surprised if both the team indulge in a shortened match.
It is worth mentioning that the hosts will be led by South Africa all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo. Kyle Abbott, Ravi Bopara, Alex Hales, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller and Dane Vilas will also represent Heat in this season.
