Anthony Martial reveals he was desperate to prove Mourinho wrong

Anthony Martial reveals he was desperate to prove Mourinho wrong during the Portuguese’s time as Manchester United manager.

In his last season as Manchester United manager, Anthony Martial failed to break in to the starting 11 consistently. To make matters worse for the Frenchman, Mourinho did not shy with his criticism of the player during press conferences and post-match interviews.

In an interview with French broadcaster RMC Sport, Martial spoke on Mourinho’s tactics of getting under the skin of his players in an attempt to prove a reaction out of them.

He said: ‘It’s true that I’d have preferred it if he’d told me directly, there’s no need to say it in front of everybody. After that, you definitely want to prove him wrong.

‘He didn’t start me during the first few games and each time I came on, I scored. In the end, he told me: ‘You see, now you understand what I wanted’.

‘It can get to you. You just want to show him you deserve to be on the pitch.’

Unfortunately, Mourinho’s tenure at the club ended after the club failed to show any improvement. In the time since, Mourinho has taken charge at Tottenham while Anthony Martial has since become an integral component of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United squad.
