Bruno Fernandes VAR Controversy: Manchester United receives huge favour from VAR

Bruno Fernandes VAR Controversy: Manchester United receives huge favour from VAR, as received a dubious penalty against Aston Villa.

Manchester United’s match against Aston Villa started with controversy as Manchester United received a penalty even though the camera spotted that Bruno Fernandes was not even fouled before going down.

Yet the penalty was given on that basis. It makes it even more strange as even VAR further allowed the penalty to be taken, causing a huge question on the reliability of the technology.

Fernandes tries a 360 turn and stumbles upon Erzi Konsa just inside the box, to which referee Jonathan Moss decides to award a penalty to Manchester United. After a brief VAR check,  Moss stands by his initial decision.

However, it was spotted in the process that Fernandes instead of being fouled lands on Konsa’s leg and eventually causes his own fall, but n the end Aston Villa pays the price.

FIFA taking over VAR

The moments like these reinforce the thought that VAR shall be amended or revoked because it is allegedly failing to fulfill its purpose. On Thursday, FIFA announced that it might take over the VAR everywhere.

The thought behind it is to make it centralized and curb the irregularities generated by the variations formed by each football association for their own leagues.

Manchester United’s top-4 pursuit

Despite this controversial decision, Manchester United has been phenomenal since the return from suspension. There pursuit for top-4 is almost successful and even in this match, they are likely to fetch 3 points.

Later in the match, Mason Greenwood once again strikes with a phenomenal goal from outside the box to give Manchester United a comfortable lead before the end of 1st half.
