Chelsea conceded the only goal of the match in 74th minute. With only 3 minutes left in the match, they were given a golden opportunity to equalise when the Video Assistant Referee alerted the on-field official to Daniel Wass’ handball in the penalty area.

After careful review, the blues were rewarded with a shot from the spot. It looked like Chelsea would manage to salvage a point from the match. However, rather shockingly, Ross Barkley insisted on taking the kick as he snatched the ball from regular penalty taker, Jorginho.

Like it happened at Chelsea, Barkley missed the shot. He hit the ball hard into the crossbar as it cannoned off to safety. The miss proved costly as Chelsea lost the match 0-1 to Valencia with the Blues at no point since looking like they could pull the equaliser.

Valencia have in the process become the first team to beat Chelsea at the Bridge since 2015. This is also their first win against the Blues in the competition. Chelsea’s streak of 38 consecutive European games where they have scored has also come to an end.

The only streak that still stands is Chelsea’s abysmal showing against Spanish sides in the champions league. Chelsea will have a lot of reflecting to do if they are to avoid losses like this in the future.
