UNC Investigation Leaves Michael Lombardi’s Future in Limbo

Michael Lombardi, North Carolina’s general manager, is under investigation by the university, and his attorney isn’t holding back. In a statement to The Athletic published Saturday, Lombardi’s lawyer Tom Mars described the probe as “a witch hunt.”

Lombardi was placed on paid administrative leave on July 27 after an HR complaint was filed, and UNC formally confirmed it was investigating him three days later. The College Sports Commission reportedly reached out to the university shortly after the leave was announced, adding another layer to a situation that has stretched on for weeks without a clear end date.

UNC has said little publicly about the specifics. In a statement to USA Today Sports, the school said its Office of University Counsel is “in the process of investigating this matter” tied to “concerns behind allegations that led to the personnel action regarding Michael Lombardi announced on July 27.” The school added that because the matter “involves confidential personal issues,” it “will not comment on the nature of the allegations or discuss personnel information.”

The Legal Pushback

That silence from UNC is exactly what Mars is pushing against. His “witch hunt” characterization, delivered directly to The Athletic, suggests the investigation is dragging on far longer and going far deeper than it should. It’s worth noting Lombardi isn’t just any staffer. He’s the highest-paid GM in college football, making $1.5 million annually, which raises the stakes on both sides of this dispute.

Lombardi’s absence has been notable. He wasn’t with the program for its season-opening win over TCU in Dublin. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, who is on medical leave, also missed the trip.

What Comes Next

UNC hasn’t indicated when its internal review will wrap up, and the College Sports Commission’s separate inquiry is still in its early stages. That leaves Lombardi’s status – and Belichick’s front office – in limbo heading into a season that already carries plenty of scrutiny, given the broader questions swirling around roster rules and compliance across the sport this year.

UNC is staying tight-lipped, and Lombardi’s camp is going on offense, setting up a standoff that could stretch well into the Tar Heels’ season.
