Chris Smalling issues hilarious response after referee awards BMG a penalty despite the ball hitting his face last night in the Europa League.

Refereeing decisions have come under a lot of scrutiny off late. It is not as if the number of mistakes has suddenly increased. There have been a vast number of mistakes that have changed the course of the game in the past.

The VAR however, seems to do very little in changing that. Instead, it has already become a bane for many who believe that the FA’s around the world simply do not know how to use the technologically efficiently or correctly.

Despite all its flows though, AS Roma would have loved to have the service available to them as a horrible referring decision allowed Borussia Mongchengladbach to crawl their way back into the match.

Scottish referee, Willie Collum awarded BMG with a penalty in stoppage time, BMG striker Lars Stindl tucked away the penalty to equalise in the 95th minute of the match. However, replays have shown that the ball struck Chris Smalling square on the face; his hand was nowhere near the ball.

Smalling, who is on loan at AS Roma from Manchester United, fumed on twitter after the controversial decision denied his team a well-deserved victory last night.

Smalling however, had a much funnier response on his Instagram as he left a mock note explaining the location of his arms and head.

With the match drawn, Roma are on 5 points now. They are still the leaders in group J. However, second place Istanbul Basaksehir are behind them with only point between them. Had the result gone their way, Roma would have a much more comfortable lead of 3 points.

As things stand now, the group is much tighter than the Italian team would have desired.
