"Every second innings he gets two or three lives": David Warner reasons why Marnus Labuschagne is the luckiest cricketer in the world

Luck or fortune is part and parcel of any sport in the world, and a player cannot simply rule out its significance and the need to have it by his/her side while playing. Some fortune by your side can even win you a World Cup, while the lack of it can overwhelm you to a point where you might even start doubting your ability.

However, the world’s no.1 Test batter at present – Marnus Labuschagne, has somehow made sure to keep the Goddess of Fortune by his side so far in his young career, or that is what his fellow teammates absolutely believe in.

As per Fox Cricket statistician Lawrie Colliver, this 28-year-old right-handed batter has been caught on 20 occasions, but has been unbelievably dropped 16 times as well between July 2019 and December 2022 in the Test format. As per Colliver, Labuschagne would have averaged around 44 at present (and not 59.43) had all these first drop chances in each innings actually caught by the fielders.

Australia’s experienced opening batter David Warner, as along with some of Labuschagne’s other teammates in the team are absolutely certain with regard to why the latter has been able to ride his luck in every other innings that he turns up.

Hilariously, they refer to the eagle sticker on the bottom of his bat as the reason for his good fortune. Notably, he has played each of his Test inning so far with the bat always carrying this very sticker.

“Marnus is the luckiest cricketer in the world,” remarked Warner while referring to the aforementioned sticker, on the Amazon documentary series ‘The Test’, which will be premiered on January 13.

“Every second innings he gets two or three lives. He must have that little crow at the bottom of his bat,” he further added.

What does the Eagle sticker actually signify?

As per Labuschagne, the sticker simply serves as a momento, while the eagle represents a bible verse, Isiah 40:31.

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;

“They shall mount up with wings like eagles;

“They shall run and not be weary;

“They shall walk and not faint.
