Happy Birthday Sunil Gavaskar: The former Indian captain has been receiving heartening birthday wishes since midnight.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is celebrating his 72nd birthday today. It is since midnight that Gavaskar has been receiving heartening birthday wishes across social media platforms.

It speaks highly about the stature of a former player who continues to receive love and admiration from plentiful fans even more than three decades after last playing for India.

During his 16-year playing career, Gavaskar had amassed 13,214 runs in 316 innings across formats at the highest level. First-ever batsman to score 10,000 Test runs, Gavaskar also has 35 centuries and 72 half-centuries across formats to his name.

Out of his 233 international matches, Gavaskar captained India in 47 Tests and 37 ODIs between 1976-1985. Not perturbed by the responsibility of leading the Indian side, Gavaskar scored 4,151 runs in 105 innings across formats with the help of 11 centuries and 19 half-centuries as captain.

Of the many roles that he has played over the years, Gavaskar continues to be an active and a cherished cricket commentator who calls the game in various parts and competitions of the world.
