"Is one day cricket dying": Yuvraj Singh worried about ODIs citing half-empty Greenfield International Stadium during 3rd IND vs SL ODI

Quite a vocal admirer of India batter Shubman Gill, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh didn’t miss out on an opportunity to congratulate Gill during the ongoing third ODI against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram.

Gill, who was part of a 92-ball 95-run opening partnership alongside captain Rohit Sharma (42), didn’t give away his start to score his second ODI century. The 23-year old player then formed a 131-run second-wicket partnership alongside former India captain Virat Kohli to propel the team into a commanding position.

Had it not been for Gill playing a rash shot off Sri Lanka pacer Kasun Rajitha in the 34th over, he could’ve easily registered a career-best performance at the highest level. Gill, who stepped out to play a big shot, ended up missing the ball completely primarily due to low bounce on a slower ball. As a result, walked back to the pavilion after scoring 116 (97) with the help of 14 fours and two sixes.

Yuvraj took to social media platform Twitter at the time when Gill had completed a half-century and was batting alongside Kohli in what appeared to be an effortless partnership today.

Hoping for Gill to reach the three-figure mark, Yuvraj must have witnessed his wish turning into the truth within the next hour or so. However, the southpaw ended up expressing a major concern in the form the future of ODIs.

Not pleased with the sight of a half-empty Greenfield International Stadium, Yuvraj wondered if an ODI being played on a Sunday not being able to allure fans was a sign with respect to the potential end of the format.

Only the fifth match to be played at this venue, it is bit of a surprise that fans haven’t turned up to the stadium irrespective of this being a dead-rubber. Although one can’t deny that there is an overdose of cricket across formats, people not showing interest in a home match involving the Indian cricket team is saddening to say the least.
