"Just Don't Use The Professionals": Shubman Gill Spider Man Stint Allures Criticism From This Actor

India batter Shubman Gill is all in readiness of donning another non-cricket-related hat to further diversify the portfolio of his professional career. In addition to being known for his primary line of work of a cricketer, Gill has also successfully stepped into the world of modelling in the recent years – which includes both brand endorsements and walking the ramp in a fashion show.

Currently part of defending champions Gujarat Titans in Indian Premier League 2023, Gill’s next professional assignment won’t be ICC World Test Championship 2021-2023 final but ‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’.

It was around noon that Sony Pictures Entertainment India officially announced a collaboration with Gill. With the 23-year old player having dubbed for the Hindi and Punjabi versions of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, it will become his first dubbing stint.

While a youth icon of Gill’s marketability joining hands with a worldwide admired character such as the Spider Man was always going to be a source of amazement for plentiful fans of both the parties, an actor has found faults with this association.

Ashwin Mushran, who has worked in popular movies such as ‘Lago Raho Munna Bhai’ (2006), ‘Life In a Metro’ (2007), ‘Sanju’ (2018) among others, took to social media platform Twitter to not mince his words whilst taking a dig at another instance of a famous personality bagging a specialist’s part in the showbiz.

In what is a commonly followed route for the sake of earning better mileage for a project, Mushran highlighted how Gill’s “follower count” worked in his favour. For the unversed, Gill has 4.5 million followers on Instagram and another 1 million on Twitter.

Apart from being part of close to three dozen movies, television shows and web-series, it is noteworthy that Mushran has himself dubbed in around 20 English and Hindi movies.

Should Specialists Be Preferred Over Popular Names in the Showbiz?

In an ideal world, yes. However, since we’re not living in an ideal world, one can’t really blame any one individual here.

Taking into consideration how filmmakers treat films as more of business than art, one understands why they prefer eminent names for specialized roles. That being said, one also understands Mushran’s point of view and the pain of losing a part to someone from a completely different and unrelated field primarily because of his/her large number of social media followers.

Speaking of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, it will release on June 2, 2023, only in cinemas around the world. Other than Hindi and Punjabi, the movie will release in eight more languages in India.

The optimist in him is waiting for the day when Punjab Kings will win their maiden Indian Premier League title. When not watching cricket, he is mostly found in a cinema hall watching a Punjabi movie.
