Pat Cummins Injury Update: What happened to Pat Cummins on Day 4 of Perth Test vs West Indies?

During the fourth day of the first Test match of the ongoing West Indies’ tour of India in Perth, Australia captain Pat Cummins hasn’t taken the field in the second innings after suffering an injury.

The development was made public by Cricket Australia after the home team set West Indies a 498-run target. With as many as 154 overs across five sessions remaining in the match, West Indies have enough time to score the required number of runs. Having said that, if they start to lose early wickets, the same number of overs will appear all the more in a bid to push for a draw.

Resuming from their overnight score of 29/1, Australia scored 153 runs in the 26 overs that were bowled in the morning session today before declaring their innings. Batter Marnus Labuschagne following a double century in the first innings with a century in the second was a primary reason behind Australia being able to score in vicinity of six runs per over.

Pat Cummins Injury Update

As far as Cummins is concerned, the 29-year old player is “experiencing some mild right sided quadricep soreness” according to a Cricket Australia statement. As of now, there is no confirmed update with respect to Cummins’ further participation in this match.

Cummins, who was the most economical Australian bowler with bowling figures of 20.2-7-34-3 in the first innings after becoming the seventh-fastest to pick 200 Test wickets, will be sorely missed by the hosts especially if West Indies start to dictate terms in the remaining part of the match.

All-rounder Cameron Green’s bowling workload is highly likely to increase in the absence of Cummins. Green, who has bowled all of 10 overs in the match without getting to bat in both the innings, would be eager to contribute in some manner by picking wickets during the business end of a Test.

Highest run-scorer for Australia in the first innings, vice-captain Steven Smith is leading the team in Cummins’ absence.

UPDATE: Cummins has returned to the ground to lead Australia but will resume bowling on Day 5.
