Surrey vs Somerset: Ravi Ashwin picks five-wicket haul on Surrey debut in County Championship 2021

Ravi Ashwin picks five-wicket haul: The Indian spinner has put on display a game-changing spell on his Surrey debut at The Oval.

During the fourth day of a Group 2 County Championship 2021 match between Surrey and Somerset at The Oval, Surrey all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin picked a five-wicket haul on debut to reduce Somerset to 60/7 at lunch in the second innings.

After Jack Leach and Roelof van der Merwe picked a wicket each to bundle out the hosts for 240 in 114.1 overs in the first half an hour of the day, Ashwin ran through Somerset’s batting lineup picking bowling figures of 13-4-23-5 before lunch.

Taking the new ball for the second time in the match, Ashwin drew first blood in the seventh over when Somerset wicket-keeper batsman Steve Davies (7) was caught behind by the Indian player.

Tom Lammonby (3), who was Ashwin’s solitary wicket in the first innings, was the second batsman to be dismissed in the ninth over. Ashwin then accounted for Somerset captain James Hildreth (14) as he was found wanting in front of the stumps.

It was just before lunch that Ashwin dismissed George Bartlett (12) and van der Merwe (7) to pick his 49th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. With a couple of sessions remaining in the match, Somerset are currently leading by 249 runs.
