CSK had a very unusual day one in the IPL auction, as they surprisingly filled their squad with ageing all-rounders. In addition to Dhoni, Raina and Jadeja, CSK brought in Watson, Bravo and Jadhav in addition to Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir.
Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis were the other notable additions to the CSK squad, as they picked a very experienced but ageing group of players.
CSK needed to bring in a young Indian fast bowler, as they made it quite obvious in the auction. They went all in for Jaydev Unadkat, but were eventually outbid by Rajasthan Royals, who bought left-armer for R 11.5 crores.
The CSK camp were tensed, as they urgently needed someone who could bowl in the death overs. So that’s why when Shardul Thakur’s name came up in the auction, CSK went all out for him and got the pace bowler for Rs 2.2 crores.
With players running out, CSK bid for Deepak Chahar, as they managed to steal him for just Rs 80 lakhs. Chahar had previously played with MS Dhoni in the RPSG last year, and had previously mentioned how he wanted to play with the wicket-keeper again.
“It was a great learning experience from Dhoni. I not only shared the dressing room but his room as well — as anyone could walk in to his room which remained open 24 hours.
“He takes utmost care of the juniors, doesn’t hesitate to join us on dinner table. It helps the juniors so that they don’t develop a complex. I will look to play with him again,” Chahar said after their match against Punjab at Eden Gardens.
Chahar was the highest wicket taker in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy, and will be hoping to carry his form into the IPL which is set to start in a couple of months.
