England Cricket Board has eventually announced a formidable 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Also hosting the tournament, England have announced the squad a couple of days before the May 23 deadline.
The biggest conundrum regarding England’s squad was the inclusion of fast bowler Jofra Archer. Having made his international debut earlier this month, the 24-year old bowler was doing the rounds primarily because of his X-factor.
While Archer’s inclusion for the showpiece event was all but confirmed but there were apprehensions regarding whom will make way for him. Left-arm pacer David Willey, who has been bowling with the new ball for England for quite sometime now, has been made to face the axe to accommodate Archer.
Among the other major change is the inclusion of spin-bowling all-rounder Liam Dawson in place of 33-year old Joe Denly. James Vince, who was brought into the side in place of Alex Hales, has retained his place in the side.
“I hadn’t seen [Archer] play live before but he’s certainly lived up to expectations. He’s got good control, good pace and he can bowl in all the three phases of the match,” England coach Travor Bayliss was quoted as saying about Archer.
“It’s been a hectic last six months but the guys have come through and I fully expect them to play well. For any team, knockout cricket is when the most pressure is. Our first job is to get through and qualify for the semi-finals. Get to a semi and anything is possible,” Bayliss talked about England’s hectic schedule ahead of the World Cup.
