Alpine releases '100 race El Plan' which they couldn't have done with Fernando Alonso

Rebranded as Alpine in 2021, the Enstone squad began their new season with a 100-race plan to become the title contenders.

A race means four seasons’ worth of plan given the record-breaking number of races taking place in a calendar year.

It is safe to say that Alpine did make progress in the 2022 season as they were able to deliver a few results. However, that came at the cost of prioritising performance over reliability.

Fernando Alonso, was not happy with this approach as he suffered the most retirements over the season.

It looks like Alpine plans to do well into the future with their 100-race ‘El Plan’ without Alonso. Since they did not offer the 2-time world champion a multi-year deal and he ditched them for Aston Martin.

What is the 100-race plan that Alpine is working towards?

Matt Harman, Alpine’s technical director, revealed the teams’ plans speaking exclusively to RacingNews365.

He explained that the plan involves facilities, technologies, simulation technologies and performance development.

The team is not focusing on just incorporating more people, they’re focused on the types of people and what particular expertise they bring to the table.

The team is set on the drivers’ front, with Pierre Gasly joining his childhood rival and compatriot Esteban Ocon in a French set-up.

What effects does Cost Cap have on the plan?

Earlier, teams had the liberty to make as much expenditure as they wanted to get their teams at the top. But this changed ever since the introduction of the budget cap.

With $140 Million allowed to spend in the 2023 season, the teams need to work much more efficiently. Harman believes that the budget cap means that the team needs to be more targeted in their development.

For this to work out efficiently, a team needs to know the fundamentals that are essential and things that are nicety.
