Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin kickstarted the 2023 season in sublime fashion as the Spaniard clinched five podiums for the team in his first six races. However, ever since then, the 42-year-old’s performances have been far worse. With Alonso failing to come anywhere close to the podium in any of his last three races, he has also lost third place in the championship to Lewis Hamilton. With Alonso having a fall from grace, Aston Martin have taken the blame for the same.
Team principal Mike Krack explained in a recent interview about why he believes that his side have simply not done enough to challenge the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren for the final podium spots. The Luxembourgish team principal made it clear that Aston Martin have had a fall from grace because of the simple reason of not being able to find enough performance in the second half of the 2023 season.
Mike Krack explains why his side have struggled to secure podiums
While speaking in a recent interview, Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack gave an honest assessment of why his side’s performances have dropped significantly in the second half of the 2023 season. As quoted by soymotor.com, the 51-year-old said (in statements published by RacingNews365), “Well, it’s pure development“.
Krack then added, “You see that some teams have really made great progress and some less. It’s quite simple. We haven’t done enough. The others have probably increased the gap between us and Red Bull, rather than the gap has become larger by itself“.
The Luxembourgish team principal then concluded his remarks by stating that he now hopes Aston Martin can at least close the gap by a little to the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren. With the Silverstone-based outfit’s performances having dropped significantly, Fernando Alonso is far from happy.
Fernando Alonso is furious with Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso grabbed all the headlines this past weekend at Suzuka after he slammed Aston Martin on the team radio. The 42-year-old was furious with the team and slammed their strategy on the radio by stating (as quoted by mirror.co.uk), “You’ve thrown me to the lions by stopping that early“.
The Spaniard was unhappy as he believes that Aston Martin’s strategy cost him an opportunity for a better points-scoring finish. Alonso ended up finishing eighth and a whopping 17 seconds behind seventh-placed George Russell.
