"I Could Be a World Champion": Sergio Perez Shoots Title Challenge at Max Verstappen After Spectacular Win in Baku

Sergio Perez had an impressive win in Baku on Sunday, which gave him a big boost for his title challenge. Earlier seen as a docile teammate of Max Verstappen, the Mexican race driver is now more ambitious than ever and is declaring a title challenge.

Speaking on that, Perez has told the media that he is prepared for the title challenge. Moreover, he also said he would rather play with kids and not go across the world if he doesn’t want to be a world champion.

“Having three kids at home, I wouldn’t be traveling around the world if I didn’t believe I could be a world champion. I’m working towards that. There’s so much you can talk about outside the car. It’s important to deliver on the track,” said Perez to Skysports.

Sergio Perez had his Melbourne redemption

The Mexican race driver had a horrible race in Melbourne at the start of April. By finishing P5 in Australia, he saw a huge deficit against his teammate in the championship standings.

Therefore, Azerbaijan Grand Prix was a crucial race for the Mexican race driver. And he certainly got the maximum out of it after winning both races over the weekend.

Now, Perez is only six points behind Verstappen in the title race. It remains to be seen whether Perez pulls yet another Nico Rosberg championship-winning season or not.

The Red Bull hegemony

Red Bull this year has won all the races. The four race wins are equally divided between Verstappen and Perez, and the competition between the two is surely getting stiff.

And it’s necessary. Considering that no other team on the grid matches Red Bull is a huge concern. So, before the Red Bull hegemony translates into Verstappen hegemony, Perez needs to maintain his form.

Definitely, Red Bull will have to prioritize a driver later in the season, and we know who it will be. But as of now, the Milton-Keynes-based team wants the status quo to go on and look at the rest later in the season.
