"I love what I do": Fernando Alonso responds to Lewis Hamilton praising him for never giving up on F1

Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso have been rivals for a long time. As soon as the former made his debut as Alonso’s teammate, the animosity between them started developing, which transcended into one of the fiercest rivalries in F1. Amidst the on-track drama, there has always been mutual respect between each other, which they often showcase.

In an interview, Hamilton praised Alonso for his ‘never give up’ attitude. He admires the Spaniard’s tenacity to keep going, even though he no longer drives a race-winning car. A reporter told Alonso that Hamilton loves this quality in him, but he wondered how he kept his motivation up.

“I love what I do,” he replied. “Of course, I would like to have a car that I can drive for the title.”

Alonso last drove for a team that could challenge for the Title back in 2014, when he was with Ferrari. Joining McLaren and Alpine thereafter did not help his cause of seeking more World Championship wins.

Fernando Alonso eyeing Championship win with Aston Martin

Midway into the 2022 season, four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel announced that he would leave F1. Aston Martin (Vettel’s team) however, did not waste time in announcing Alonso as his replacement. This was a move that surprised many, especially because Alpine looked to be in a much better state than the Silverstone-based outfit.

The French squad was regularly in the points whereas Aston Martin struggled to break into the top 10 for the majority of the year. Alonso, however, insisted that he made the right decision. He believes that they have what it takes to challenge for the Title once again in 2-3 years.

“From what was out there, Aston Martin is one of those teams that can achieve that goal in 2, 3 years,” the Oviedo-born driver said. “That’s important at my age. I don’t have forever. As long as there’s only a one percent chance of winning the title again, I’ll keep going.”

Alonso is 41 years old but still at the top of his game. He signed with Aston Martin on a multi-year contract, and both him and the team are confident about them achieving success together.
