“I think loyalty is quite important in this world nowadays” – Anthony Hamilton says winning a record eighth world title is not the sole reason Lewis Hamilton re-signed with Mercedes for 2021.
Lewis Hamilton finally signed the contract extension with Mercedes as he chases a record 8th Drivers’ Championship. But according to his father Anthony, that is not the reason the extension has been agreed upon. He also hinted at his son’s retirement, adding that Lewis has more to do in life than just racing.
“They’ve [Hamilton and Mercedes] had a long relationship together. I think loyalty is quite important in this world nowadays, so it’s nice to see them coming together for another year.
“I don’t think the record is the target… there’s a realization that obviously he’s getting older and wants to do other things in life. There’s more to life than racing, but for now, he’s happy to do another year.”

Lewis Hamilton to continue fight for diversity
His son expressed delight at the signing of the deal as he looks to create history before potentially retiring. Lewis Hamilton has also been fighting against racial prejudice and has vowed to continue it this season as well.
“I am excited to be heading into my ninth season with my Mercedes teammates. Our team has achieved incredible things together and we look forward to building on our success even further, while continuously looking to improve, both on and off the track.
“I’m equally determined to continue the journey we started to make motorsport more diverse for future generations and I am grateful that Mercedes has been extremely supportive of my call to address this issue.”
