“It’s his decision” – Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff throws ball into Lewis Hamilton regarding retirement
“It’s his decision” – Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff has suggested Lewis Hamilton can go on as long as he wants in Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton finally put pen-to-paper in a multi-million dollar deal with Mercedes, ending months of deadlock. It is only a one-year deal though, as Hamilton’s apparent demand of three wasn’t agreed upon. But his boss and mentor Toto Wolff has suggested it is down to him to continue, as his ability still allows to compete at the highest level of the sport.
“It’s mainly Lewis’s decision. As long as he enjoys racing, I think he’ll be able to continue longer. He develops himself as a driver, he takes care of himself in terms of physical training and mental preparation, so I don’t think that – in terms of ability – it ends in 2021. But at the end of the day, it’s his decision.”
It’s a new deal, but only for 2021 as things stand

Anthony Hamilton speaks Lewis Hamilton’s mind
His Dad Anthony Hamilton also agrees with Toto Wolff’s views. He believes it is his love for Mercedes and the short that made him sign the extension. Well, if that continues, we might see more of the reigning champion beyond this season as well.
“They’ve [Hamilton and Mercedes] had a long relationship together. I think loyalty is quite important in this world nowadays, so it’s nice to see them coming together for another year.
“I don’t think the record is the target… there’s a realization that obviously he’s getting older and wants to do other things in life. There’s more to life than racing, but for now, he’s happy to do another year.”
