“Mattia was right”– Nico Rosberg on Ferrari picking Carlos Sainz instead of Daniel Ricciardo, who is struggling at McLaren.
Carlos Sainz gave in an impressive result for Ferrari on Sunday with a P2 in Monaco, and apart from that, he has been heavily consistent in his performances.
This leads the former world champion, Nico Rosberg, to take back his words, who was critical of Sainz’s appointment in Ferrari and wanted Daniel Ricciardo to replace Sebastian Vettel.
“You have to make the comparison also with Ricciardo, Perez that are nowhere,” Rosberg said. “They switched teams like Sainz, but Sainz seems like he’s always been there. Because he gets along well with the car, he’s pushing Leclerc.
“He was almost at his level this weekend. So congratulations, because he’s doing great. It’s been a great choice by Ferrari. I was very critical, I said ‘you have to take Ricciardo, why do you take Sainz?’ Instead, now he’s doing great. Mattia was right, for sure.”
“That’s great, that’s how it has to be,” added the 2016 World Champion. “Because he knew in qualifying he was on a good lap to do the pole when Leclerc hit the wall. He had the speed – it’s nice to see him so strong.”
Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo struggles.
While Rosberg wanted Ricciardo in place of Sainz at Ferrari, the Australian replaced the latter in McLaren, where he has openly confessed that he is struggling with MCL35M.
Ricciardo’s performance was one of the lowest of his career, as he didn’t even end up in the top 10, and for most of the race, he struggled behind.
Even in the qualifying, he was eliminated in Q2. At the same time, his teammate Lando Norris went onto stand on the podium at the end of the weekend and had been taking charge of McLaren’s aspiration to end at third in the constructors’ championship.
