"Only Fools Are Optimistic": Toto Wolff Quashes Rising Hopes With Mercedes After Giving Reality Check

Mercedes brought in major upgrades to their car at the 2023 Monaco GP weekend which improved their performance drastically. Red Bull is still the most dominant team, but Mercedes have closed the gap ever so slightly. However, team principal Toto Wolff has claimed that it would be ‘stupid’ of them to get over-optimistic about the changes in their car.

Mercedes had a very underwhelming start to the 2023 season. Heading into the Spanish Grand Prix, the Silver Arrows were in P3, one point behind Aston Martin in the constructor’s championship. The team brought in some upgrades in Monaco, but it did not change anything drastically as it is not the kind of track that can represent a car’s true pace. Things changed radically for them in Spain though and the team ended up with two of their drivers on the podium.

However, not all was bright for the Brackley-based outfit. Even though Lewis Hamilton managed to finish second behind Max Verstappen, the Briton was 23 seconds behind Verstappen when they finished the race. This clearly shows there is a long way to go before Mercedes catches Red Bull.

Toto Wolff is very realistic about Mercedes’ performance

Toto Wolff explained that it will not be wise to celebrate the gains made by his team. He pointed out that Mercedes have made gains of about two or three-tenths per lap and it is a huge step forward. But, he also mentioned that they need to remain calm and keep the good work going.

As quoted by Autosport, Toto Wolff said, “I’m never optimistic. Only fools are optimistic, but it feels different to last year. It’s still bouncing and it’s interesting to know why, but we’ve learned a lot in the last 12 months. So, generally, I have plenty of reasons to be a little more confident

Despite the skeptical approach, Wolff admitted that he is happy with how his team has worked to improve the car.  Last year we also looked pretty good in Barcelona and yet as we go on there will be ups and downs and there will be tough moments, but I am pleased with the job they have done at Brixworth and Brackley”

Mercedes looking to catch up to Red Bull

2024 might be a better year for Mercedes when they could finally challenge for the World Championship. The Silver Arrows have already brought in a new special advisor and the best part about it is that she is the ex-COO of Red Bull. Led by her advice, Mercedes have planned to revamp their campus in Brackley with the expectation that it will help motivate its workers.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen also believes that Lewis Hamilton can make a comeback and fight for the world championship if he has a good enough car. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Verstappen said, “He’s been one of the greatest drivers ever in the sport. So, for sure if he has the car to do it, he can fight for the title again.”

If Mercedes can figure out the issues that their car is facing and improve them before than Red Bull can develop their challenger, the Silver Arrows will become a force to be reckoned with once again. Now, the onus is on them to work hard and decide how fast they will be back to the top.
