"We Got More Points Than Ferrari": Even at His Worst Fernando Alonso Vindicated as His Former Team Finishes Behind Him

Fernando Alonso hoped that the Spanish Grand Prix would be his best day at work, but on the contrary, it turned out to be his worst so far this season. After securing five podiums in the first six races of the season, the race in Barcelona was one of the places where he eyed his 33rd win. But he finished with a disappointing P7. However, as per Minuto Deportes, he was happy that he finished above Ferrari.

Alonso couldn’t have asked for a worse day. Even his teammate Lance Stroll, who is often bashed for being a “pay driver,” finished above him for the first time this season.

But on the other hand, Ferrari also gave a lackluster performance. While Carlos Sainz comfortably finished P5, his teammate Charles Leclerc P11. So, it satisfied his ego when seeing his former team and now a rival finishing on a worse footing than him.

Fernando Alonso is happy to have more pace than Ferrari

After the race, Alonso admitted that his team lacked pace in Barcelona. It was a worrying sign against a rising Mercedes, as Aston Martin so far rejoiced the de-facto second fastest spot on the grid. However, Alonso is not so worried until and unless the Silverstone-based side is above Ferrari.

“Something didn’t work, but I don’t know what it is now. We will solve it once we get back to the factory. Even on a difficult weekend, we got more points than Ferrari,” said Alonso.

Since leaving Ferrari, Alonso has shown his disdain for his team, as he lost on multiple title opportunities because of their continued errors on the track, which to date continue. However, going forward, Alonso’s biggest target is not Ferrari but a nearby rival.

Going to destroy Mercedes in Canada

As per Alonso, Aston Martin has some upgrades in the pipeline. Therefore, the Spanish race driver has asserted that going into Canada, they aim to crush the neighbors from Brackley.

And it wouldn’t be surprising if Aston Martin manages to pull this off. Mercedes’ engineer Andrew Shovlin has already said that Montreal is a very different track than Barcelona. Many of the low-speed corners and massive straights go against the qualities of Mercedes after the new upgrades.

But it could also be a big bluff by the Silver Arrows. So it remains to be seen how the events in Canada will turn out as the F1 is into the race week.
