"We were able to overcut Ocon and Giovinazzi" - Lance Stroll pleased with Aston Martin double points at Monaco

“We were able to overcut Ocon and Giovinazzi” – Aston Martin had struggled all season but brilliant strategy meant Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel were both in the points at the Monaco Grand Prix.

After the push-above-your-weight success of Force India and Racing Point, hopes were high for the iconic Aston Martin brand’s return to F1 after a lengthy hiatus. With a stellar James Bond-inspired launched, and undoubtedly the best livery on the track, AND Sebastian Vettel joining the outfit, this was meant to be their season.

Except, it’s not. Far from it, in fact. Racing Point/Aston Martin has gone from competing with McLaren to be the best-of-the-rest last season to competing to be the best of the ‘A’s – Alpine, AlphaTauri, and Alfa Romeo, this. After four disappointing races, the Silverstone-based outside came back with a bang at Monaco, though, much to the relief of their large global fanbase.

Sebastian Vettel opened his scoring with his new team, finishing a brilliant P5 after over-cutting Pierre Gasly and his friend Lewis Hamilton. Stroll fared well too, finishing P8 after starting on Grid no. 12. If it was Gasly and Hamilton for Vettel, Stroll targeted Ocon and Giovinazzi with his overcutting. Safe to say, Stroll Jr. is pleased, now that Aston Martin is leading the ‘A’s points table – one point ahead of AlphaTauri, and two of Alpine.

“Yeah, it is always tough mentally, it is very demanding, you have to stay focused from lap one until the end. Around here, with the walls, there is no margin for error and it is always very intense. Happy with the job and good to pick up some points.

“It was a good day for us. We had a good strategy, had some good pace on the first stint when the others pitted on the soft tyres we were on the hard and went very long and had some good pace at the end of that hard stint.

“We were able to overcut Ocon and Giovinazzi so a great day for the team with both cars in the points.

“I think we are learning every race so definitely some things to take away from this weekend and we will come back stronger in a couple of weeks.”
