Would hire Daniel Ricciardo again for Renault claims Cyril Abiteboul as the Australian driver set to move to McLaren.
Daniel Ricciardo is set to leave Renault for McLaren at the end of the season, and the French team is now realizing the importance of him, especially after he won a podium at Nurburgring, marking Renault’s first podium since 2011.
Amidst all of this, Renault’s team principal Cyril Abiteboul has claimed that he would hire Ricciardo once again if he ever gets a chance.
He admits that the time 2019 was maybe a year too early for both sides, “but there are not many possibilities to sign a driver like Daniel who was available on the market,” says the Renault boss. “I still think it was the right move back then.”
Abiteboul believes Renault wouldn’t be the team it is today without Ricciardo. The painful year together drove Renault to drive the necessary changes. “We are in a much better position this year, and Daniel can do things like that”
The podium in Germany was important
Ricciardo was not even expected to make such a brilliant end to the Eifel Grand Prix, as he started the race from P6, but an impressive start by him by defeating Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas’ elimination got him set for the podium.
“And it was important that we pacified the commentators and showed why it made sense back then,” said Abiteboul. Abiteboul is aware that his words when he left Ricciardo were received negatively.
“I think that was because back then it was honest, emotional and unfiltered communication,” said the Frenchman. “And Daniel is just as unfiltered and honest about what he does for the team.”
