Frenkie De Jong shows dejection after knowing Ajax's fate in Champions League

Frenkie De Jong shows dejection after knowing the fate of Ajax in the Champions League, even though his side qualified into the next round.

Frenkie De Jong is having a brilliant debut season with Barcelona. The 22-year-old midfielder has helped his side to qualify into the Round of 16 in the Champions League as a group leader.

Barcelona further ended their group stage campaign after winning over Inter Milan by 2-1 but after the end of the match, De Jong looked dejected as he found out that his boyhood club Ajax has been eliminated from the Champions League.

The Dutch champions were in fierce competition with Valencia and Chelsea in their group and the latter two received the qualification, sending Ajax into the Europa League after they ended 3rd in their group.

Ajax needed either a win or draw against Valencia to get a qualification into the next round but the Spanish giants defeated them by 1-0 to secure their qualification.

Meanwhile, Chelsea just needed a win against Lille to land safely into the next round. Although, Ajax is to be blamed over here as they missed several opportunities in the way to miss out from their qualification.

Firstly, slipping away from a decent lead in the 4-4 draw against Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge and now a defeat at home against the Bats. It would not be wrong to say that De Godenzonen showed a poor display of game against Valencia.

Surely, a fall from grace for the last year’s semi-finalists, over where de Jong played a crucial role to mark a historic run by Ajax in the apex European competition after years.

This shows Ajax has shown a slump after losing its star players De Jong and Matthijs De Ligt this summer. Meanwhile, De Jong has gone onto cement his place in Barcelona’s midfield.
