Cyberpunk 2077 has always had a thriving modding community with many game improvements. However, players are confused since many of the mods aren’t working after the release of Phantom Liberty and Update 2.0.

Cyberpunk 2077 recently got Update 2.0 to support Phantom Liberty and it even made countless changes to the base game. The gameplay overhaul makes the title next-gen with visual upgrades, additional content, and more.

However, after the addition of the new update, many players who used to utilize mods aren’t able to run the game. In this article, we will explain why these mods aren’t working and give a workaround on how to run the game after the launch of the new update.

Why Cyberpunk 2077 is not able to support mods after Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty update

Update 2.0 was officially launched for Cyberpunk 2077 on September 21, 2023, and brought a huge amount of changes. On the main screen of the REDLauncher, CDPR’s first-party launcher displays a warning about disabling mods. The reason it is provided is that past mods will not be supported after the new update.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been completely overhauled with gameplay fixes, visual changes, new content, easter eggs, and more. Since old mods used to make use of older files to improve upon, those files aren’t there anymore. Thus, if players try to use these mods on the newer version of the game, it will simply crash and won’t run.

Issues like this one have been there since Update 1.6 for the game as well, where players had to disable their mods. However, fret not as the modding community is working on the updated version of their mods. Until those updated versions of the mods surface on the internet again, patience is requested from players as of now.

The solutions players are left with after Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk 2077

As mentioned before Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0 completely changes how the game had been functioning before. Thus, already installed mods aren’t working with the updated version of the game. Until support for the mods returns again, players have these options left:

1) Uninstall the mods manually

If you have listed all the mods you have installed before, you have to manually select and uninstall them. After doing so, use the check file integrity option and fix the game to its original state. If the game is still not running after that, you might have missed some files that are interfering with the original game files.

2) Reinstall the game and remove all files related to the game

In case you are having trouble manually removing all the mods you have installed, it is best to reinstall the game. This is a faster and easier method, however, it does require some time to download and reinstall the game.

On the bright side, if you had Cyberpunk 2077 installed on a Hard Drive and have available space on the SSD, use that. CD Projekt Red has officially asked players to use SSD for the title after the new update as it makes it more stable. Thus, it is better to reinstall the game and enjoy all the new content added to the title.

3) Wait for the modding community to update their mods to support Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty

The last option left for the player is to patiently wait for the modders to fix their mods and add support for Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty. This process can take from weeks to months, depending on the mod developers.

Since modders have already tinkered with the files of Cyberpunk 2077, there’s a possibility that these will be fixed fast. Until then, the removal of mods is the only way to play the updated game and enjoy the latest DLC.

Phantom Liberty and Update 2.0 brought many new content for which mods were used. With the arrival of these changes, some of the mods aren’t quite required. Update 2.0 adds a new vehicle combat system, changes to cops in the title, visual overhaul, and more. Moreover, Cyberpunk 2077 is more optimized than before making it a great update without mods.
