Berbatov wants Mourinho to sign Maguire

Dimitar Berbatov wants United to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has propounded the Red Devils to sign the Leicester City and England defender Harry Maguire in the January transfer window. The center-back was on United’s wishlist in the summer transfer window, but the move did not go through as the Foxes wanted a gargantuan amount.

Jose Mourinho’s men lost their tie 2-1 against Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday, but they have were not dependent on this result to get the qualification to the last 16.

Speaking to the BT Sports after the Valencia clash, the Bulgarian said “It’s always difficult to buy someone that’s really good in the winter window so if you are lucky enough to buy someone then you need to keep in mind how he’s going to integrate with the team.

“If it’s someone coming from a foreign league it can be more difficult than joining from an English team. If you’re buying a central defender then you also need to think about who you’re going to partner him with because you could buy a really good player but if it doesn’t work out then that just causes another problem.”

“I think they need someone at the back that’s comfortable on the ball and don’t buckle under pressure even when someone is attacking you. You need to be calm, be able to pass the ball into midfield and carry it. I think they need a player like that.”

“I was really impressed with Harry Maguire in the World Cup because he was so composed on the ball and I like that quality in a defender because it benefits the whole team.” he said.

The Red Devils manager wanted a central defender, but the deal for Harry Maguire, Diego Godin, and Toby Alderweireld never materialized. It has only resulted in a severe conundrum as Manchester United have the fifth-worst defense in the League having leaked 26 goals in their first 16 games this term.

Despite conceding goals at the other end, goalscoring has not been significant at the other end by netting only 28 goals so far. As Berbatov says, the Red Devils does not have a leader at the back to constantly keep the team organized.

Signing Harry Maguire would seem out of reach because the English star has signed a new five-year contract aftermath the summer transfer window. On the other hand, it is likely to see United pushing for Toby Alderweireld who is likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur soon or rather than later.

Manchester United are currently 6th in the Premier League table and ten points adrift of the fourth place. Manager Jose Mourinho has said that it would be tough for them to secure a spot in the top four having already lost so many games early on this season. However, that would be their aim to secure Champions League football for consecutive seasons.

The Red Devils will travel to Merseyside to play their arch-nemesis Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
