Helmut Marko on Ricciardo’s move to Renault, claiming that he moved there because of the Honda project and maybe more money

The Ricciardo to Renault saga hasn’t quite come to an end yet, as Red Bull still seem a bit perplexed with Ricciardo’s decision.

Helmut Marko had an interview with Auto Motor und Sport recently in which he expressed his ‘discomfort’ over the entire Ricciardo contract negotiation fiasco.

Marko revealed that Ricciardo and Mateschitz had sat down with Ricciardo before the Austrian GP, explaining the future prospects to the Australian and what Red Bull’s vision is.

Before the Hungarian GP, Ricciardo has confirmed to Marko that he would be signing an extension on Tuesday, during the test.

However, that did not quite transpire and Ricciardo called up Marko on Thursday confirming his departure and his move to Renault.

Marko clearly wasn’t impressed with Ricciardo’s approach towards the entire situation, especially as Ricciardo did not quite keep his word.

“I can not understand the change. That was a very strange story. The negotiations were difficult. On Wednesday before the GP Austria, I sat together with him for two hours and we agreed. During the Grand Prix weekend there have been some improvements for him.

“In Hungary, he said to both me and Mr Mateschitz that everything fits, he signs on Tuesday at the test. He did not do that. On Thursday afternoon I got a call. He was so funny in the voice. I told him: Come to the point! We are adults. Then he said: I’m going to Renault.” Marko said.

Marko feels that the Honda project and maybe Renault offering him more money played a part in Ricciardo’s decision.

“I can only assume that he does not believe in the Honda project and that Renault offered him a very high amount. But I think with Shoeys it will be hard for him in the near future.” Marko said.
