How Chelsea managed to beat Liverpool in the race for Timo Werner. The German striker seemed to be heading towards Anfield until the Blues swooped in for him.

Chelsea did not add to their roster in the January transfer window despite overturning their transfer ban. In the time since however, they’ve added two very good additions to their side. While Hakim Ziyech’s move also came out of the blue, Timo Werner’s has blindsided many.

It is an open secret that the German forward wanted to play under his compatriot at Liverpool, in a late twist, however, Chelsea have, in principle, agreed a stunning deal worth £53million. Werner will join the Blues on a five-year deal worth £180,000-a-week.

Frank Lampard has long spoken of his desire to add to the side he currently possesses. In fact, he lamented their lack of activity during their January transfer window.

According to the Telegraph, former teammates and now manager and sporting director duo Lampard and Petr Cech, made an undercover trip to Germany in a bid to personally convince him to join their side.

The pair laid out their plans for the future and told the 24-year old where he fit in it.

Cech being fluent in German also helped in making the communication easier with Werner and his father who also serves as his agent.

Chelsea also have the COVID-19 pandemic to thank for.

With several football clubs missing out on matchday and broadcasting income during the suspension, Liverpool were no longer in a position to pay £50m+ on a player they would not be regularly playing in their starting XI.
