How Michael Jordan’s Trainer Once Used ‘Bowls of Uncooked Rice’ To Get Him in Shape: “Even He Was Surprised”
Michael Jordan was the guy to bring about many firsts in the NBA. From red and white shoes to rule changes, Jordan was a pioneer. But what he isn’t known for is for bringing about personal training to the fore. His trainer, the legendary Tim Grover set the blueprint for all NBA player trainers to follow today. And he came with some rather bizarre and off-beat techniques involving bowls of uncooked rice.
Yes, Grover, who has methodologies that are backed by science also chose to indulge in really weird ways to train athletes. Of course, since his first and his most important client was Michael Jordan, it would be prudent not to try and maximize his ability. Speaking to Sports Illustrated in 1996, he revealed a lot of key information.
Tim Grover used unique methodologies to help Michael Jordan get better
As per the article, which came out around the time Jordan had rejoined the league, Grover had to use various techniques to get his client in shape. From exercises that used rubber bands for fingers to bowls of uncooked rice, Tim’s methods were unique.
He took a player who had never lifted weights and got him ready to contend for a title. Speaking to SI, he said, “Take baseball. When you throw a baseball, you’re trying for a low, flat trajectory. You want to get that ball from one place to another as fast as possible. In basketball, it’s totally different. You’re looking to throw up a shot with a high trajectory. Different muscles. That’s why, when Michael came back from baseball, he had problems. We’d been working different muscles. Even he was surprised. He thought it would be a lot easier. I told him it was going to take a year, and it did. Different muscles.”
The insight is quite shocking but it made sense. MJ didn’t just dominate everyone out of sheer will or ability. He had the training to back it up.
Tim Grover’s brilliance helped MJ get NBA ready
Grover recognized that Jordan’s body needed a transformation to adapt to the physical demands of the NBA. With his expertise, Grover devised a rigorous training regimen that focused on improving Jordan’s conditioning and agility.
He incorporated intense workouts, tailored nutrition plans, and mental toughness exercises to elevate Jordan’s performance. Grover’s relentless dedication pushed Jordan to push beyond his limits, enabling him to regain his elite athleticism and dominate the basketball court once again.
Through Grover’s guidance, Michael underwent a remarkable transformation, showcasing the power of disciplined training and a relentless mindset. He came back to win the NBA title 3 times in a row.
