Ganguly on Dhoni's future

Ganguly on Dhoni’s future: Ganguly believes that ‘champion’ Dhoni still has it in him to hit the ball in the stands.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is known to express his views on various cricketing topics. Irrespective of his words going well with others or not, Ganguly doesn’t usually shies away from saying what he wants to say.

In which is not the first time that Ganguly has spoken about another former India captain but current wicket-keeper batsman in Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ganguly called Dhoni a ‘champion’.

“He’s another champion… Fantastic career for 12-13 years since winning the World Twenty 20. Just like everyone else he has to perform. There’s one must in life: whatever job you do, wherever you are, whatever age you have, how much experience you have, you have to keep performing at the top level otherwise someone else will take your place,” Ganguly was quoted as saying with respect to Dhoni.

Ganguly also expressed hope at Dhoni finishing his career on a high for according to him the 37-year old cricketer deserves it. “I wish him [Dhoni] all the luck because we want champions to go on a high, whenever he goes. I still feel he can hit the ball in the stands. He’s a phenomenal cricketer,” Ganguly added.

Back in 2006, the sight of the then former Pakistan Prime Minister Pervez Musharraf heaping praises on Dhoni ended up becoming a fond memory for the Indian fans. Recalling that incident, Ganguly added, “I still remember Pervez Musharraf asking me from where did you get him?”

‘I told him he was walking near the Wagah border and we pulled him in’,” Ganguly said in a chuckling manner.

With the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 nearing its commencing date, Ganguly was asked about India’s possible squad for the same. “I am not a selector but I expect 85-90 per cent of the current team will play in the World Cup,” he concluded.

What followed for an 8-year-old was an instant adulation for both Ganguly and the sport. The optimist in him is waiting for the day when Punjab Kings will win their maiden Indian Premier League title.
