CSK latest news: Deepak Chahar picks MS Dhoni's best quality as a captain

Deepak Chahar picks MS Dhoni’s best quality: The Indian pacer spoke highly about his captain at Chennai Super Kings.

India and Chennai Super Kings pacer Deepak Chahar has come out in support of his IPL captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni stating that it is “never easy” to start performing in the biggest T20 competition without playing prior regular cricket.

“A batsman cannot bat the same way for 15-20 years. If any batsman hasn’t played regular cricket before, it is never easy to just come to a competition of the level of IPL and start performing, it takes time,” Chahar was quoted as saying by IANS.

In four innings for Super Kings before the tournament got postponed, Dhoni had managed just 37 runs at an average and strike rate of 12.33 and 123.33 respectively. Chahar, who brought to notice how Dhoni had successfully shifted gears in the second halves of IPL 2018 and 2019, expected the best of the 39-year old player whenever the 14th season of the IPL resumes.

“He has always played the finisher’s role, which is even tougher when you haven’t played regular cricket. Even in the 2018 and 2019 IPL seasons, Dhoni bhai started a bit slowly by his standards, but his stroke play became fluent as the season progressed. So, you might get to see the best of MS Dhoni in the second half of the season,” Chahar said.

Having made his IPL debut for Rising Pune Supergiant under Dhoni in 2016, Chahar has now played six IPL season under the legendary captain. In the process, Chahar also managed to make his ODI debut in Dhoni’s last match as captain.

Second-highest wicket-taker for Chennai this season, Chahar has had a considerable amount of success for the franchise picking 52 wickets in 50 T20s at an average of 25.94, an economy rate of 7.55 and a strike rate of 20.62.

Chahar, who has mostly played for Super Kings under Dhoni, hailed the captain’s “trust” in him especially in crunch situations. The 28-year old player also picked Dhoni’s best ability as a captain.

“This has been my fourth year at CSK and Dhoni bhai has shown his trust in me as his strike bowler. This trust is so important because he has not just inspired me but also many others.

“His best quality as a captain is about how to utilise a player on a particular day for a particular situation. I’ve bowled three overs in the powerplay in pretty much every game for CSK and have learned a lot through him,” Chahar added.
