The 10th-anniversary celebrations are moments away as Dota 2 gears up for another crazy update. And to commemorate the festivities, we had the famous guide-maker Torte de Lini with us sharing valuable input.
July 9, 2023, marks ten years of Dota 2‘s public release, and the journey has been grand. The community has seen everything from titans rising in The International to having absolute gems of professional esports. And now, to celebrate such heights of achievement, Valve is returning with many new features.
There will be many new changes coming to the game. The devs look to revolutionize how their previous TI prize pool mechanics worked and will also look to make the game and certain events more engaging. The cosmetic spree isn’t ending anytime soon, but players can expect a better yield in the game.
What to expect from the 10-year anniversary of Dota 2?
Battle pass reprisal
Even though the game has been there for much longer, the official release took place only a decade ago. And since then, many new and exciting updates have come to the game. Once a testament to the greatness of TI, Valve introduced the TI compendium, and it blew the minds of every Dota 2 player. In recent years, that compendium has turned into a full-fledged battle pass that only favored those who could pay more.
But eras end, and with the celebration, Valve looks to introduce a new regime of events and battle passes to help players’ yields off of those. Even when it came to gameplay updates, they were much more diverse than right now. Every new update used to make it or break it for the heroes in the meta. But now, especially with the New Frontiers update, Dota 2 has taken a different turn. And they look to capitalize on the 7.33 patch update’s momentum.
This is what Valve had to say when addressing the last TI battle pass.
Last year, we started to ask ourselves whether Dota was well-served by having this single focal point around which all content delivery was designed. Each step we had taken made sense when considered independently: any single piece of content would be more valuable when bundled as part of the Battle Pass, so we bundled more and more. This led to a momentous content drop every year, but it also greatly limited our ability to do things that were exciting and valuable for players but didn’t fit into the Battle Pass reward line.
Even Torte de Lini had to say the same regarding the old battle pass system. He said,
This new update details reminded me of how the Dota 2 battle pass was originally. Back then, it was called a Compendium. Whiel going through what they had to say, I realised it was right. Not many people had to oppurtunity to get it or took advantage of it. So what they are doing now is less catering to the already established player-base, and focus on everybody that enjoys the game.
He also said that it quickly turned into a money-fest. Instead of everyone enjoying the battle pass, it soon became how much somebody could pay and how many levels they had. He also acknowledged Valve’s idea of turning the reprised battle pass system so everyone can enjoy it and not everything is stuck behind a paywall.

While no game updates were confirmed for today, Valve has promised something for the TI. A new TI-themed update will feature in Dota 2 in September. While almost nothing was pointed out in the blog post regarding what to expect, a few things can be extrapolated.
As it looks from the blog post, Valve is looking to shift more toward player accessibility and engaging events. All of it points toward an engaging event that will come to Dota 2 in September to celebrate this year’s TI. While conversing with Torte, he shared expectations from the following major patch.
During the current New Frontiers patch, the heavy focus has always been on the magnanimity of the current Dota 2 map. This leads to many more things a player has to focus on when playing a match. Which eventually ends up lowering the landing period for supports (mainly). With the upcoming patch, Torte wishes the laning stage could get some love from the devs. He said
I just think that the laning stage is so short and the late game is long, the emphasis on lane success is much more improtant. Even for midlaners, it is more important that they get early advantage and capitalize on it through ganks or streamlines team fights in the early levels.
he also hopes that mid-lane becomes more dynamic with pos 4’s coming and threatening the opponent mid a bit more. There has to be more fluidity between supports with more emphasis on mid and late-game. if you lose a lane too severely, your levels become so far behind that it becomes very hard to return.
Keeping all that in mind, the Dota 2 10-year anniversary will surely be a spectacle for every fan. And many new features will come to the game. And it is simply a wait of time until it all arrives.
