Jasper Cillessen receives guard of honor for Copa del Rey despite losing in the final

Jasper Cillessen receives guard of honor for Copa del Rey despite losing in the final last season while representing Barcelona.

Jasper Cillessen joined Barcelona in 2016. He served them as a back up to Marc-Andre ter Stegan. Cillessen was mostly used in the Copa Del Rey and played only one league game last season. The Dutch Shot stopper left the Catalian Giants this summer to join Valencia in search of more game time.

Valencia are the reining holders of the Copa Del Rey. It is for this reason that they received a guard if honor from Real Sociedad in their first game of the season. However, it made for an awkward moment with new recruit Cillessen who represented Barcelona in the final last season. Valencia won the match 2-1 and despite being on the losing end, Cillessen was also one of the recipients of the honor.

Unfortunately for Valencia, the guard of honor was the only good that happened for them on the day. They were taken to their limits by Sociedad. However, Valencia found the lead after an hour into the match.

They were then given an opportunity to double the lead but their striker failed to convert a penalty. To make matters worse Francis Coquelin was sent off 10 minutes into injury time for a handball in his own area. Mikel Oyarzabal converted the late spot kick past the new keeper.

This ensured that both teams would walk home with a point in their bag. Not the kind of start Cillessen would have desired at his new home. However, at least he is getting the game time he desired. And a guard of honor as a bonus.

Like most combat sports enthusiasts, his passion for watching people fight began with WWE when he witnessed a young Brock Lesnar massacre Hulk Hogan back in 2002. This very passion soon branched out to boxing and mixed martial arts. Over the years he fell in love with the theatrics that preceded the bell and the poetic carnage that followed after. Each bruise a story to tell, each wound a song of struggle, his greatest desire is to be there to witness it all. His favorite wrestler is Shawn Michaels and he believes that GSP is the greatest to ever step foot inside the octagon. Apart from wrestling, he is also fond of poetry and music.
