Messi signed his last contract with Barcelona back in 2017, in which he was allowed to leave at the end of the season for free but instead he is going to stay a bit longer.
It seems that the same clause will once again be repeated in the new contract, where Messi will be allowed to leave the club without Barcelona interfering.
The club has maintained the fact that Messi can leave the club upon his will, Barcelona Vice-President Jordi Cardoner said it back in 2019 during an interview with Marca.
Cardoner is quoted by Marca as saying: “He can enter and leave the club when he sees fit. We are calm and there is a lot of positivity, especially in the dressing room.
“Leo will do what he thinks is fit, but Leo’s contract is very special because he is who he is. It’s a concession made to him and other players who deserve it.”

But with this update, Messi’s chances to retire at Barcelona have been enhanced, while there have always been speculations that Messi will one day return to his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys.
For now, further reports are awaited and the financial details of the contract are still hidden, Messi already earns whooping £500,000 per week reportedly, his next raise is definitely going to be expensive.
