Liverpool are coming on the back of an emphatic 4-1 victory over Norwich City while Chelsea were on the wrong side of a 4-0 drubbing at Old Trafford. However, Jurgen Klopp is not letting the results fool him into letting him keep his guard down.

“We respect Chelsea a lot, saw the game against Manchester United and if you saw the game without the result you would have no idea how the game was because the game was really a very good game.” The Liverpool boss had said earlier.

A lot of people are looking forward to the Liverpool vs Chelsea match and have come up with their own prediction on the outcome. Here at SportsRush we have also made a prognosis on the match and have concluded that Chelsea are the likelier of the two to come out on top tonight. To further illustrate our point, here are three reasons.

Better head to head record in Knock-Out matches

Frank Lampard has had a couple of opportunities to lay his hand on the UEFA Super Cup before. However, he came out short in 2012 and 2013. He now has the opportunity once again and this time he will lead Chelsea against Familiar foes in Liverpool.

Both these clubs have faced each other 10 times in knockout games in all competitions in the last 12 years. Lampard has been at the heart of a majority of these matches and will hope that the Blues replicate the success which has seen Chelsea get the better of Liverpool 6 times. On the other hand, Liverpool have come out on top only once. The two have faced each other to a couple of draws in the Champions League knock-out legs and drew a League cup match that had to be replayed.

Football isn’t played by numbers. However, they do suggest trends and while Liverpool may be European Champions. The numbers suggest that in Chelsea they have received their worst opponents possible in a one-off encounter.

A host of 1st choice returns

Chelsea played a somewhat inexperienced squad against Manchester United last weekend. While Lampard will probably continue his policy of giving the younger guys a chance in the league, he is most likely going to rely on experienced hands in important matches such as tonight’s game.

A number of injuries and late returns forced Lampard’s hand in the season opener but with most of his squad at his disposal, Liverpool are going to face a tougher and replenished side tonight. N’Golo Kante, Alonso, Pedro, Willian and Giroud are all set to return to the team, giving Chelsea much more experience, formidability and stability to the side.

Liverpool’s shaky defence

Liverpool boast of a very tight defence. They have arguably the best back 4 in all of England, perhaps even Europe. However, the game against Norwich City showed that Jurgen Klopp’s men aren’t as impenetrable in the back as one would have thought.

Liverpool took an early lead in their last match and returned 4-0 by half-time itself. However, they ended the match at 4-1; failing to add to their score while conceding one. The game against the Canaries showed that Liverpool’s defence could be breached with dedicated discipline.

With no disrespect to Norwich City, surely Frank Lampard commands a better side. If the Blues can put Liverpool under the same pressure that the Canaries managed for double the duration that they did, then there is no reason why Chelsea won’t leave Istanbul as the winners tonight.
