Bears WR Luther Burden Leaves Practice With Apparent Left Leg Injury

Luther Burden III had to be helped off the field during Saturday’s Chicago Bears training camp practice, and the team has yet to say how much time its rookie wide receiver is going to miss. Per multiple reports relayed by Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Burden limped straight to the locker room after appearing to hurt his left leg on a route over cornerback Tyrique Stevenson.

No firm diagnosis or return date has come out of Halas Hall yet. The injury came during a routine drill, not a big hit. Burden was going up to make a contested catch over Stevenson when he came down awkwardly and immediately began favoring his left leg, according to the report. Stevenson also stayed on the ground for a moment but was able to shake it off and return to work, while Burden did not.

Alper’s report notes that reports indicate Burden appeared to injure his left leg, but nothing beyond that has been confirmed publicly.

Short-Term Absence, Week One Still the Goal

Without an official update, the safest read is the one buried in the original report itself: the Bears are hoping any missed time for Burden is brief. That’s notable given how much the coaching staff has leaned on him through the spring and summer as a complement to Rome Odunze in the receiver room.

Chicago’s preseason window is still open, which gives Burden some room to recover without it costing him regular-season snaps. The Bears are scheduled to open the regular season on September 13 against the Carolina Panthers, and as the NFL continues expanding its international schedule and marquee early-season windows, every team wants its key skill-position players healthy from Week One on.

The next update to watch is whether Burden returns to practice in the coming days or gets held out for an extended stretch. Until the Bears say otherwise, Week One remains the target.
