Man Utd news: Mike Phelan appointed as new assistan manager of Manchester United

Man Utd news: Mike Phelan appointed as new assistant manager of Manchester United after returning to the club in December.

Manchester United appointed Ole Solsjkaer in December after sacking Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho. Meanwhile, Mike Phelan also joined Solskjaer as his deputy, returning to the Old Trafford after six years.

Further, Manchester United have now confirmed the appointment of Phelan as the assistant manager of the Red Devils from the following season on a 3-year-contract.

However, it was believed that he was interested in the job of new technical director of the club but Solsjkaer wanted him to remain at his role.

Phelan, earlier has served as a Manchester United player and also been an assistant manager during the charge of Alex Ferguson from 2008-2013.

The former Manchester United midfielder is delighted to join the club on permanent basis as he said, “I am thrilled to be back as assistant manager. Manchester United has been a huge part of my life since I joined as a player in 1989 and I am delighted to be able to continue that relationship in this key role.”

“Since returning in December, I have enjoyed working with Ole, Michael (Carrick), Kieran (McKenna), Mark (Dempsey) and Emilio (Alvarez) and we are all focused on preparing for next season.”

Whereas, Solsjkaer showed his admiration for the services of Phelan during his pre-match conference, “I think he’s fantastic at his job as assistant manager and I’m very pleased that finally they’ve agreed. When Ed (Woodward) rang me that was my first port of call to assist me and we’re here now for a few years together.” said Solsjkaer.

The Red Devils have struggled this season and after Jose Mourinho’s sacking, things looked even worse than before. However, Solsjkaer did not succumb to the pressure and earned the faith of the Manchester United fans after few initial matches.

Further, Solsjkaer has a lot to figure out for the next season as the club require several reinforcements in order to have a better campaign next season.
