Manchester United: Ex-Man Utd superstar hints at stunning return to Old Trafford

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar hints at a stunning return to Old Trafford in an interview.

Manchester United are going through another transitional phase after the departure of Jose Mourinho.

The side, who announced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the interim manager after the sacking of Mourinho in December, handed a permanent contract to the Norwegian last month.

However, many fans and experts alike have called for Manchester United to appoint a director of football. Various names have been recommended for the post – most of them including former club stars.

One of the names was Edwin van der Sar, the legendary goalkeeper who played a key role in the side’s Champions League triumph in 2008. The ‘Flying Dutchman’ retired at Manchester United in 2011. van der Sar has finally broken silence on his future and the links with the Old Trafford outfit.

Edwin van der Sar to Man Utd?

The former Dutch goalkeeper addressed the rumours surrounding a return to Manchester United.

“I know United is a much bigger challenge than Ajax,” van der Sar told the Sunday Times.

“United is not just a big and famous club, but also a worldwide brand — yet when you’re inside it’s still a family place.

“I remember when I came from Fulham. Oh it’s United but after one day you felt at home. The washing ladies. Mike the chef. Kath [the receptionist]. They’re still there.”

Edwin van der Sar has played with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during his time at the club, and stated that he could make a comeback to the club to reunite with his former teammate.

“You need to cherish that and Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] is doing a great job at it. But also Ed. I have utmost respect for him, what he does for the club,” van der Sar said.

“So I don’t need to be the big man. I want to feel I contribute, and you can only do it for something you believe in. United is a special place.

“Who knows, eventually? But for the coming years I’m here.”
