Mateo Kovacic signed for Real Madrid in the 2015 summer from Inter Milan. The Croat signed for a fee of £31 million. Since his arrival at Real Madrid, he has been sensational in his play. Whether he was used as a defensive midfielder or in the attacking department, the World Cup’s silver medallist was instrumental and stood out for the Whites.

However, he has failed to break into Real Madrid’s line-up in any of his past three seasons with Real Madrid. Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Luka Modric have all dominated and been ever present.

Mateo Kovacic is now discontented with the fact of not being able to start regularly with the thirteen time European champions. The 24 year old is hence looking for a transfer away from the club. Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea have all been credited with interested from the Premier League.

AC Milan and Inter are also in the running for the versatile midfielder. Mateo Kovacic has now refused to train with Real Madrid, as per reports from Spanish daily Marca. The Croatia international wants his future resolved at the earliest, before which he won’t train again with the club.

The news comes on Monday evening. Kovacic trained in the morning session on Monday but later travelled to the Valdebebas to inform the Merengues’ officials about his wishes. Mateo Kovacic has held talks with the club and Julen Lopetegui on three different occasions regarding his future.

While there has been no promise over a regular role with the club, the Whites believe that Kovacic is Modric’s successor and an important part of their future.

But with a situation like this upon them, Madrid feel that letting Kovacic leave is the best bet on their hands. Either a loan move or a sale with a buyback clause seem to be the most feasible options with them having one grip on Kovacic.

The 24 year old played just 1826 minutes last season and is determined to play more, either at Real Madrid or elsewhere.
