Mercedes provide update on Hamilton contract and Alonso rumours
Mercedes don’t find themselves in the ideal position this season, but will have to concede that a little luck did come their way, with Hamilton winning the Azerbaijan GP.
But when god opens one door, he tends to close another one(oh wait, isn’t it supposed to be the opposite?).
Bottas suffered a cruel DNF in Baku, as debris on the track resulted in a tyre puncture a few laps before the chequered flag.
The Baku win for Hamilton probably balanced out his Melbourne loss, but still there seems to be no clarity with respect to the Brit’s new contract with Mercedes. Maybe he is stalling until the car is ‘absolved’ of all its issues.
Toto Wolff though is confident that nothing has changed and that Hamilton will for sure sign a new contract with Mercedes.
“We haven’t talked now for a few days, a few weeks, because it was so intense in getting our act together with the team and all our priority has been concentrated on that,” Wolff said.
“This is what we do.
“But we are very well aligned with what we expect from each other in the future and it’s just finding the time to sit down.” he added.
A few reports have been doing the round that Alonso could be joining Mercedes next year, taking Bottas’ seat.
Alonso wants to be at the helm of the sport again and feels that a good car could make him reach the pinnacle.
However, Wolff has banished those reports, coming up with a very cheeky analogy to support his claim.
“You don’t need another woman when you have a beautiful wife already,” he said.
Wolff feels for Bottas, but admits that luck favoured them a bit in Baku, with Hamilton winning it form nowhere.
“Luck is part of the sport and the Safety Car went against us in the past and it gave us a win. It still doesn’t feel right for two reasons,” he said.
“The first reason is that we lacked the pace and the second reason is that the quickest guy on track didn’t finish with a puncture that was caused by debris on track three laps to the end.
“It is just very brutal for him to lose what looked to be an easy win.” he concluded .
