Messi overtakes Ronaldo in Forbes top-100 highest paid athletes list

The Barca star is ranked at 2nd on Forbes list of highest paid athletes.

Lionel Messi has overtaken Cristiano Ronaldo at 2nd in the Forbes highest-paid athletes list. Argentine and Barcelona footballer dethroned Cristiano Ronaldo from the last year’s list, as he now earns USD 111 millon.

Messi earns USD 84 million from salary and winnings, while he makes USD 27 million from endorsements. Even though Cristiano Ronaldo’s earnings have increased, he has dropped down to third.

The Portuguese forward makes USD 61 million from salary and earnings, and earns USD 47 million from endorsements.

It is worth noticing that Ronaldo earns £365,000 per week at Real Madrid, whereas Messi, according to Forbes, makes close to £500,000 per week.

Neymar is also among the Top-10 athletes, making him the third footballer on the list. The Brazilian forward earns USD 73 million from salaries, and makes USD 17 million in endorsements, taking his total earnings to USD 90 million.

9 footballers appear on the Top-100 list. Apart from Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar, Gareth Bale (35th), Paul Pogba (52nd), Oscar (56th), Wayne Rooney (59th), Luis Suarez (60th) and Sergio Aguero (86th) have made it to the list.

Surprisingly, there are no women athletes on the list. Last year, Serena Williams featured on the list.

Floyd Mayweather, the American star boxer has topped the list. He earns USD 285 million, which include USD 275 million from salary and winnings. MMA star Connor McGregor is ranked at 4th, while LeBron James (6th), Roger Federer (7th), Stephen Curry (8th), Matt Ryan (9th) and Mathew Stafford (10th) make the rest of the top-10.
