Mohammad Shami has been dealt with a severe blow today, as the FIR lodged by his wife against him has resulted in the Kolkata police charging him with IPC sections related to rape, domestic violence and attempt to murder.

Shami’s elder brother too has been dragged into this and the duo have been charged under Section 307 (attempt to murder), 498A (domestic violence), 506 (criminal intimidation), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison), 34 (acts by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and 376 (rape).

“My husband’s elder brother, Hasib Ahmad, raped me when I went to my in-law’s place in Uttar Pradesh last year,” said Shami’s wife on Friday morning.

A few of these sections are non-bailable and could lead to a jail term of at least 10 years.

Jahan’s lawyer has stated that non-bailable sections have already been issued against Shami and his brother and that a case is being started against them.

“I have been informed by Kolkata Police officers over phone that they have slapped non-bailable sections against Shami and starting a case against him,” said Jahan’s lawyer.

Jahan has accused Shami of cheating on her with multiple women across the world and of torturing her and physically abusing her over the two years of their marriage.

Shami’s new BCCI contract has been withheld until he is proven innocent.

“The BCCI has taken cognisance of all the reports emerging about Mohammed Shami’s personal life. It is purely a personal matter and the BCCI has nothing to do with it. However, keeping in mind that the woman in question has met the police commissioner of Kolkata, it is only prudent on BCCI’s part to wait for any official inquiry to take place,” a BCCI official told PTI
