“A Lot of Missed Opportunity”: Kyle Larson on Throwing Away Chances This Season From Strong Positions

Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson seems to be having a fantastic time at the moment. After his race win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he automatically made it into the season finale at Pheonix. Hence, all of his troubles can now take a back seat as he prepares for the all-important race ahead.

Despite being in such a great position Larson recently spoke with the media where he talked about throwing away certain opportunities during the season. He spoke about the incidents he had been involved in causing him to lose out on both track position and crucial points.

Kyle Larson elaborates on missing out on opportunities this season

Larson talked to Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass ahead of the Homestead Miami race about his involvement in six incidents while leading in races this year.

The HMS driver said, “I try to always, I guess, find the positive from it. So, yeah, at least you’re having things happen from the lead and not from 15th. That just shows how good our race cars have been all season long, and we’ve put ourselves in position a number of times.”

“We’ve won three races (four now with Las Vegas) plus the all-star race. It’s been a good year, but there’s been a lot of missed opportunity. You keep working hard, keep trying to execute and just putting yourself in position.”

Lastly, he mentioned that if one can put themselves in the position, they might not win all of the races, but would surely be able to win some of them.

Larson explains if the season so far has been fun

Speaking further into the interview, Pockrass asked the #5 driver if he had been having fun so far with his season’s performance. Larson mentioned, “Yeah. We’ve been in contention more often than we were last year, so it’s been a lot of fun, knowing that you’re going to show up to the racetrack with a shot to win at every style of track is always good.”

The 2021 Cup Series champion added, “I’ve had a lot of fun really in all my racing — sprint car, everything, getting to run the IndyCar car for the first time this week, the [dirt] late model, I haven’t been in that in a while but we’ve had a decent season in that as well.”

Larson ended by stating that although it has been a successful year, there are still many more races to win and a Cup Series championship to claim.
