“That Stuff Bothers Me”: Joey Logano Slams the Idea of Putting His 5-Year-Old Son in a Racecar
It is true that most athletes encountered their respective sport early in their childhoods. In NASCAR too, several of the big names started racing early in their lives. They showcased their talent and the roads began to open up for them as they climbed the ladder higher and higher. But when it comes to Joey Logano, the 2x Cup champion isn’t in a hurry to push his son into racecar driving.
Even though the sons of several big names in NASCAR today, such as Brexton Busch and Keelan Harvick, have already kick-started their racing careers, Logano doesn’t want the same for his son. He explained how before his son learns how to drive a racecar, he needs to learn some fundamentals of life.
Logano’s argument also had echoes of something Tony Stewart said last month.
Joey Logano wants his son to learn the basics of life instead of the basics of racing
Speaking in a recent interview with SiriusXM, Logano touched on the subject of his 5-year-old son starting his racing career, considering that’s how such things are these days. The Penske driver argued, “He’s 5. I didn’t even start racing until I was 7. So I’m not going to push him to go out there and do something right now.”
“He’ll just go have some fun and if that means we’re going to drive stuff in the backyard and try to avoid trees and go-karts, then that’s what we’ll do. I don’t care.”
Logano claimed that his son needs to play a sport, that he needs to learn how to win, how to lose, and how to work with other people. “Right now, he ain’t going NASCAR racing. If you put him in baseball, he’s not going to Major League. He’s 5, for crying out loud,” he added.
“That stuff bothers me right now when I see people take it too serious at a young age. They don’t know what the heck they’re doing.”

Tony Stewart slammed the direction motorsports is heading in today
In an interview last month, Tony Stewart slammed the current practice of putting kids into racecars, claiming that he doesn’t like the direction motorsports is heading in as a whole. “I’m not just picking on NASCAR. There are series putting kids in late models at 12 and 14 (years old),” he added.
“It makes zero sense to me.”
Another big name from NASCAR, Brad Keselowski, also shared his take on the subject. He claimed that they’ve done a disservice to the sport and to the whole industry by reducing the age limits. Keselowski claimed that putting young kids into racecars is hurting them in their ability to develop their own lives.
