Kyrie Irving joined the Dallas Mavericks right around the trade deadline in the 2022-2023 NBA season. His arrival although hyped, brought disaster for the Mavs. And, while it wasn’t exactly his fault, Dallas who were favorites to make it to the Playoffs, fell short. This led to heavy criticism for Kyrie. However, despite having previously called him out on several occasions, First Take’s Stephen A. Smith has defended the $90,000,000-worth star’s performance in Texas on The Stephen A. Smith Show.

Stephen A. has been Kyrie’s biggest critic in recent times. The 2016 NBA Champion’s controversial personality has not sat well with the analyst, prompting him to be incredibly blunt. In fact, when Irving suggested that fans should stop paying attention to the media, Smith made his feelings on this incredibly clear. Going so far as to suggest that the Mavs star should quit the sport of basketball.
Stephen A. Smith surprisingly defends Kyrie Irving from critics who suggest he “wrecked” the Dallas Mavericks
Ever since he joined the Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie Irving has received a lot of flak. In fact, many have connected, the Mavs’ inability to make the post-season with Irving’s arrival. This, even after he averaged 27 points, six assists, and five rebounds over the course of 20 games.
Now, that he is a free agent, Kyrie has a huge decision ahead of him. There are rumors that the Mavericks are willing to offer him a five-year deal worth $272 million. A massive contract, but it is one that many in Dallas and in the NBA do not believe he deserves. And, it is this that has seen him receive support from a surprising party.
Stephen A. Smith recently defended Kyrie from allegations suggesting he “wrecked” the Dallas Mavericks. Smith, who has long been a critic of Irving claimed that it was Dallas who have messed up thus far, even admitting that Irving despite his past is still a superstar.
“Ladies and gentleman, one of the most shocking things for me to say… Kyrie Irving actually has leverage. If you the Dallas Mavericks, what you gonna do? It wasn’t Kyrie’s fault that things didn’t work out in Dallas. Kyrie Irving did what he was supposed to do. Kyrie Irving did his job.”

Either way, it all rests on Kyrie’s shoulders now. He is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after players hitting free agency. And, considering he is looking for a long-term deal, he has a tough decision to make ahead of him.
Kyrie still hasn’t made up his mind with regard to free agency
Free agency is just around the corner and there are plenty of talented players who will join new teams. But, one player who is yet to decide his future is Kyrie Irving.
As things stand, the Dallas Mavericks are in pole position to land him. However, there are other options out there as well. Another Texan team with ample cap space, the Houston Rockets could use a point guard. And, there is also the more blockbuster option of a reunion with LeBron James in LA.
